A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
