Roughly fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism left him speechless and required to be solved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
