Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
